The Conjuring Universe

The Warrens, I wouldn’t have heard of them if it weren’t for the movie The Conjuring. The movie that introduced us to Annabelle, which now have its own movies. It looks like the growing series and spin off films including their success in the box office earned them the title The Conjuring Universe in comparison to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it all started with a doll and that house near a lake at Rhode Island.

The Conjuring, released back in 2013. The movie starts off with the story of Annabelle. A doll that is haunting its owners. The disappointing part for me here is that they changed the doll’s appearance to create a haunting look. If they used the original looking doll, it wouldn’t be that scary for the movie I guess. But this is just a side story of the real story in the movie. The movie is about a house in Rhode Island that has a witch’ curse and the Perron family that recently bought the house. I believe the reason why this is such a successful movie is because it’s not your typical Hollywood horror movie that is full of screaming and blood everywhere. It was more like an Asian horror movie with a touch of Hollywood. And I guess when it comes to horror, making a movie that is closer to truth is much more sellable then those noisy horror movies.

So just like any successful movie, Hollywood would like to cash on the hype. So they made a sequel, well it isn’t really a sequel because it has nothing to do with the 1st movie except for the Warren’s connection to the story. This time we have a glimpse about the house that was the inspiration of the famous Amityville Horror. We were introduced by Valak which looks like a nun with a foundation that is whiter than her skin tone and the crooked man. The story takes us to London of the infamous Enfield Poltergeist. A family being haunted by a ghost and their little girl being possessed. To be honest, when it comes to poltergeist, my favorite movie is the original Poltergeist movie. I think the real reason why this Conjuring movie is another success is because of Valak. And because of that, Hollywood is cashing in on it by releasing a new Conjuring spin off film about The Nun to be released in 2018.

The nun is not the first spin off that came out from the Conjuring franchise. Annabelle the movie came out before Conjuring 2, and received mixed negative and positive reviews. Personally, the movie is so-so. To be honest, it’s not something I watched in theaters, I watched it online. I love dolls and I like horror stories about dolls. But this one didn’t really put a mark in my brain. I mean I have watched horror movies since childhood and I can still remember scenes in that movie and how the script goes. But Annabelle? This was shown back in 2014 and all I can remember is a crazy girl killing herself in a nursery room hugging the doll. Maybe if the makers of this movie used a doll similar to the real Annabelle, the movie could have been more interesting. I mean, how can an ordinary not so scary looking doll have a demon living in it? It will make you think twice before buying that Lalaloopsy doll for your daughter or niece on her next birthday.

I wonder if someone asked the Warren's why they used the Demon Tarot card as someone watching the lock on Annabelle's case. Are they using a demon to trap a demon here?

Now, even after having negative reviews the makers still made a sequel for the Annabelle movie, after all it made millions. It’s called Annabelle Creations and will be released next month, Aug 11, 2017. I have seen the trailer, and it looks like it’s out of context to the first movie. I mean, if this is the beginning of Annabelle, then the story of the first movie is invalid. That the first owners of the doll were actually the ones who invited a demon inside it. That Annabelle Higgins was not the reason why the doll became haunted, unless we are talking about a different doll here that looks like Annabelle. I mean, these dolls are made in bulk and what are the odds that another doll like it got possessed by a demon to. But anyway, I am yet to watch this movie, maybe online again. There is a nun here, so maybe she could be the origins of Valak. Since that movie is going to happen in 2018.

Speaking of spin offs, remember the crooked man nursery rhyme in Conjuring 2? His going to have his own movie as well and Conjuring 3 is at works. So I guess they are really going down the road of being a Conjuring Universe.
