Have you ever heard of the game Corrupt-A-Wish? It’s you make a wish and the next one whose going to make a wish will corrupt your wish before making a wish.

For example:

“I wish I will have all the money in the world.”

Player 2: Wish granted, but money now has no value since there is no circulation anymore. “I wish to be the most riches person in the world.”

That’s how you play the Corrupt-A-Wish game. It is something like this movie.

Wish upon is a more like a “Corrupt-A-Wish” game than a “be careful what you wish for” movie. We have Clare, the typical teenager who gets bullied in school and doesn’t hang out with the A listers in school, with her Dad that she feels a disgrace for having a dumpster dive as a hobby. Clare got a Chinese wishing box as a gift from her Dad which he found in the trash. Soon Clare found out that the wishing box is genuinely granting wishes and like any immature dumb teenager, starts wishing not even thinking what’s the catch.

First wish was she wished her bully to rot and true enough the next day Darcie, her bully and queen bee in school wakes up with Necrotizing Fasciitis (commonly known as flesh-eating disease, is an infection that results in the death of the body's soft tissue as Wikipedia said). What I don’t get about these teenage bullies in the movies is that their actions don’t have any justification. It’s like why would you throw food at the less popular or quiet or geeky kids? If you don’t like the person, then leave the person alone. Why do you need to torment the person?

Anyway, that same morning Clare’s dog was found dead under their house and it seems like Max (the dog) was eaten alive by rats. Like c’mon? An adult Labrador crawled under the house to be eaten alive by rats? If I was Clare I would start my suspicions in the wishing box coz 1, Darcie is now rotting in an ICU just like what she wished for and her dog just died in a very illogical way.

Next wish was, she wished for her childhood crush to be madly in love with her. Next day, Paul her childhood crush creepily stood by her locker while she was getting her things. Her wish worked and Paul is now her official stalker and she decided that his stalking is getting creepy so she breaks up with him and this made Paul break into her room and committed suicide right in front of her because she will not have him. Yeah… so girls… think twice of wishing someone to madly in love with you.

Third wish was related to her second wish. When she wished for Paul to madly in love with her, the price was her uncle’s life. Her blind uncle August dead slipping in his bathtub and hitting his head on the tub faucet. So she wished that her uncle August will leave everything to her. Wish granted, she became rich and went on a shopping spree and spa and all. This made me think what a stupid immature kid Clare is. Spending a thousand dollar on a small bag and shopping spree with her friends, spending too much money with no income coming in. I mean, it wasn’t clear what her father’s job is. We only know that his doing dumpster diving and I don’t think that kind of hobby or work can maintain their now social status.

Now, this is the part of the movie that Clare realized that she needs more information about this wishing box. So she consulted her Chinese friend Ryan and introduced her to his cousin who has more experience in translating ancient Chinese text. She was able to translate that the box grants seven wishes and by the end of the music something is paid. She sent a picture of the music box to someone to translate it further.

That night, Clare wished that her father wouldn’t be so embarrassing and voila, her father became a band member playing gigs with his saxophone. Meanwhile, the friend of her chines friend slipped and landed her head on one of her bull sculpture, right through the horns.

Next day, Ryan confronted Clare and told her that the continuation of the translation is “When the music ends, the blood price is paid”. Ryan asked Clare if she made any wishes coz his cousin is dead.

Now, even after the full translation on what was written on the wishing box, Clare still made a wish, a wish to be the popular girl. She did become popular with the death of one of her best friend as a price. Because of this she wanted to destroy the box but it couldn’t be destroyed. She also knew that if she abandon the box or throw it away all her wishes will be undone. One of her friends (June) stole it (Ethel from Riverdale :P) coz she blamed Clare of the death of Meredith their best friend. In the process of Clare getting the box back, June was pushed down the stairs.

In this part of the movie Clare has become like Smiguel in Lord of the Rings. She has become of obsessed with the box. Probably because when June took the box from her, all her wishes were reverted. Her rich uncle turns out didn’t pay his taxes for 10years and all the money that was left was just enough to pay off the taxes. Now, when she got the box back she went home like a crazy Smiguel and wished that her mother didn’t commit suicide.

And that is now her sixth wish. Her mother magically knocked on her door to tell her that she needs to blow out her birthday cake. When she opened the door her mother was there and twin sisters. It was a happy moment for her, but it didn’t last long. Her father was the blood price. On the same day her father got into a freak accident, a saw fell on him and cut of his head. This was also the day that she found out that her mother was a previous owner of the music box because of a painting she saw in their attic. With all this, she used her last wish to wish everything back the way before she got the music box. She thought by wishing this she out-smarted the music box. Coz you know, included in the writings of the box says that after the seventh wish the music box will claim the life of the owner.

After she made the wish, she was back to the morning where her father found the box. She woke up with her dog Max beside her bed. Her best friend Meredith is alive, her Father is alive. Then she absent mindedly crossed the road and she got hit by Darcie’s car. So, I guess she didn’t outsmart the box.

The movie was not well received; it got a low score in rotten tomatoes. Which I really wonder why most movies make it a big deal if they got a low score or high score in rotten tomatoes. It was a so so movie, not really that scary. Although the lesson learned here is that everything has a price.

Perhaps there is a work around with that wishing box. You can use up all 6 wishes and never to make the last wish to continue enjoying your wishes. Regarding the blood price, you can offer people to the box. So it won’t go killing off people you care about. It may work or may not
